Stormwater Tree Trenches

The 6200 Block of Belfield Avenue is one of the first three blocks chosen to turn green as a Model Neighborhood in the Philadelphia Water Department’s Green City, Clean Waters program, a 25-year plan to protect and enhance our watersheds by managing stormwater with innovative green infrastructure.

A green street reduces the amount of stormwater making its way into Philadelphia’s combined sewer pipes and reduces sewer overflows into our waterways.

On the surface, a stormwater tree trench looks just like a series of street tree pits. A stormwater tree trench is a system of trees that are connected by an underground infiltration structure designed to store water while it slowly waters the trees and soaks into the surrounding underground area.
