Arcadia Students Survey Potential Tree Locations

Working with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, TTF and students from Arcadia University’s Social Action and Social Change course recently surveyed streets in West Oak Lane. Students noted conditions along the sidewalks of a residential neighborhood and picked up trash as they worked. The data collected will be sent to Philadelphia Parks & Recreation as part of the TreePhilly campaign to increase the tree canopy of Philadelphia. Volunteers are needed for this ongoing campaign. If you are interested in helping, please join us on Sunday, April 15 for a tree surveying event or contact us to schedule a time that works for you.

Storm Drain Marking in Wyncote

TTF recently led fifteen Arcadia University students in marking over twenty storm drains in Wyncote in Cheltenham Township. These storm drain markers serve to remind people that our storm drains are not trash cans! They are designed to carry water away in the form of rain or snow melt. In some parts of the Philadelphia area, these drains lead to a sewage treatment plant, but in other areas these drains lead directly to our streams and rivers. When your car leaks oil or your pet goes on the lawn or your neighbor flicks a cigarette butt on the ground, it doesn’t just go on the ground. All of these forms of pollution end up washing into the nearest storm drain when it rains. Help keep our waterways clean by making sure trash and other pollutants stay out of our storm drains!

Community Service Networking Breakfast A Success!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our inaugural Community Service Networking Breakfast!

Representatives from City Year, Earth Force, Philadelphia University, Arcadia University, Covenant House of PA, and the Awbury Neighbors Association met at Awbury Arboretum to network and learn about volunteer opportunities. Attendees enjoyed learning about volunteer opportunities and networking with people across their watershed.

After mingling with each other and enjoying breakfast, attendees were welcomed by Julie Slavet, TTF’s Executive Director, and Beth Miner, Awbury’s Manager of Outreach and Community Engagement. Cindy Rubino, the Coordinator of Community Service at Arcadia University, described the history of TTF-Arcadia partnerships and suggested ways for other organizations to collaborate with TTF. Ashley Schmid, Education and Outreach Coordinator at TTF, discussed our current work in the community and how volunteers or interns will be able to get involved. Afterwards, attendees enjoyed a tour of Awbury Arboretum’s stormwater management features.

Community Service Networking Breakfast

Looking for great service opportunities? Come to the Community Service Networking Breakfast on February 23!

The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership will be hosting a free networking and informational breakfast for teachers and community service volunteer coordinators. At this event, you will learn about TTF’s work in the watershed and our fun and informative events for your volunteers or students. If you ever look for service learning opportunities for your network, this is the event for you!

There will be an optional stormwater management tour of the Awbury Arboretum at the end of the event.

Free Trees for our Germantown/East Mt. Airy Neighbors!

With spring quickly approaching, the Wingohocking Tree Tenders are back to work! We are currently collecting forms for anyone who would like to have a tree planted on their property in the Germantown/East Mt. Airy area in the fall of 2011. Join the Wingohocking Tree Tenders!

In response to the declining tree population in Germantown and a growing demand for street trees, TTF has created the Wingohocking Tree Tenders Group. The group will serve to educate residents on the benefits of trees in urban areas, help plan and implement new tree plantings, and help care for existing trees. This is an fun and exciting group of people who are focused on beautifing the Germantown neighborhood!

The Tree Tender Training is offered through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and includes tree biology, urban stresses on trees, tree identification, basic pruning and root care, tree planting, community organizing and access to a network of highly motivated and dedicated tree lovers.

The next training will be held on May 20th, 27th and June 3rd from 5:45pm-8:45pm at 100 N. 20th St, 19103. Sign up soon to get your certification!
