Clearview Community Park

Washington Lane and Clearview Street
Philadelphia, PA 19138

Along with our group of dedicated partners and neighborhood residents, TTF worked to transform a vacant lot at the corner of Clearview Street and Washington Lane into a stormwater management demonstration site, community meeting space, and outdoor classroom. This installation is the first in a series of vacant lot transformations that TTF plans to implement as part of our Model Neighborhood program. In a densely populated, urban neighborhood, this project reduces stormwater runoff and nonpoint source pollution, fosters consciousness of the importance of watershed health, and replaces a deserted lot with a vital community asset.

TTF kicked off our vacant lot project with an Art Garden Party hosted by students in BuildaBridge’s Artology summer program. The project showcased the artwork of local students and created a vision for what the lot transformation would eventually look like. Following the kickoff event and a series of community meetings, TTF community residents planted a variety of native flowers, shrubs and trees. We are still planning to install an educational sign and additional lighting at the lot. TTF will continue to lead volunteer maintenance events (pruning, weeding and trash removal), watershed education events for local residents, educators and schools children.

This project provides a rare opportunity to educate a new audience, to catalyze positive change and to impact stormwater runoff in a densely populated, highly developed neighborhood. With the success of this project, we will create a model that will be used in urban neighborhoods across the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford watershed, while offering a vision for environmental change across Philadelphia, and in cities worldwide.

Please join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 14, 2011!
