We joined forces with NichePHL, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful and PowerCorps PHL for a great day of service in Tacony Creek Park last week.

Starting at Tabor Road in Olney, 40 volunteers and PowerCorps crewmembers worked together to clear storm fallen debris and pick up trash. By the end of the day, we had bagged 49 large garbage bags between Roosevelt Boulevard to Rising Sun Avenue.

You never know what you will find on big cleanup days like this, and some strange stuff has certainly come out of the woods. For this event we engaged in a little friendly competition. With three categories to compete for and TTF swag and candy on the line, the results are as follows:

Oldest Piece of Trash: A potato chip bag, expiration date of 1991.

Most Beautiful Find: A decorative bedpost finial and a cellphone photo of a Green Heron.

Most Bizarre Find: A bag containing a box containing someone’s dead pet.

Honorable Mention: An archery arrow, an unidentified animal skull and a deflated Sponge Bob Square Pants ball.

(Note: winners were chosen in official Showtime at the Apollo fashion)

Thank you to all of our partners who helped to make this cleanup happen — it was a hot day but everyone worked hard. Also thanks to the award-winning Philadelphia Water Waterways Restoration Team (WRT) for picking up our bags at the end of the day. The park looks great…we look forward to you all joining us again!

Hope to see our new friends soon. Check out our Upcoming Events.
