Native Tree Plantings

Native woodland along the Tookany Creek in High School Park, Elkins Park, has been restored. Volunteers planted over 300 native trees and shrubs on approximately four acres of the park in the fall of 2006. Planting areas include a woody old field that is transitioning to woodland and established woodland that slopes down toward the creek. A wide variety of plants were chosen, including: red maple, sugar maple, butternut hickory, shagbark hickory, sycamore, swamp white oak, pin oak, red oak, chestnut oak, black willow, common alder, button bush, swamp dogwood, winterberry, arrow-wood viburnum, nannyberry, witch hazel, blueberry, American holly, spice bush, hop hornbeam, shadblow, black birch, river birch and many others. The Friends contributed 700+ hours of volunteer time.
