The theme for our “Nature’s Hidden Surprises” walk in Tacony Creek Park this month was: finding knowledge and artistic inspiration from the wind.
El tema de nuestra caminata “Sorpresas escondidas de la naturaleza” en Tacony Creek Park este mes fue: buscando conocimiento y la inspiración artística del viento.
Even though we had to cancel our walk for safety concerns, we are excited to share this lesson and experience with you!
Aunque tuvimos que cancelar nuestra caminata por medidas de seguridad, ¡nos complace compartir esta lección y experiencia contigo!
Now that Spring is here, the sunshine invites us to get outside and enjoy the warm breeze. Not only is the sun providing warmth, you can also thank the sun for that breeze, because that’s how the wind is created.
Ahora que llegó la primavera, el sol nos invita a salir afuera y disfrutar la brisa cálida. El sol no sólo está proveyendo calor, sino también puedes agradecer al sol por esa brisa, porque así es como se crea el viento.
As the sun heats up the Earth, warm air rises, while cooler air in the atmosphere starts to fall. This uneven air temperature creates the invisible wind currents that we feel.
A medida que el sol calienta la Tierra, el aire cálido comienza a subir, mientras que el aire más frío en la atmósfera comienza a caer. Esta temperatura desigual del aire crean las corrientes invisibles de viento que sentimos.
The direction of the wind is described based on the direction from which the wind is blowing. For example, easterly winds blow from east to west, while westerly winds blow from west to east. Knowing which direction the wind is coming from helps understand where a storm or bad weather may travel. A fun activity you can do at home is Making a Wind Vane: a tool that points in the direction from which the wind is coming.
La dirección del viento se describe en base a la dirección en que viene el viento. Por ejemplo, los vientos del este soplan de este a oeste, mientras que los vientos del oeste soplan de oeste a este. Conociendo la dirección que viene el viento nos ayuda entender a dónde una tormenta o tiempo malo puede viajar. Una actividad divertida que puedes hacer en tu casa es Hacer una Veleta de Viento: una herramienta que apunta en la dirección que viene el viento.
The wind has also influenced art like photography, paintings, and poetry over the years. Have you ever written a poem based on a Spring breeze, nature, or wildlife? Get inspired by going for a walk in Tacony Creek Park or in your own backyard!

To get you started, here are the rules for writing a Haiku poem:
3 lines: 1st & 3rd line have 5 syllables each; 2nd line has seven syllables.
Example:
Gentle, caressing
Soft breeze plays among birch leaves
Friendly wind blowing
Para ayudarte a comenzar, aquí están las reglas para escribir un poema de Haiku:
3 líneas: 1ra & 3ra línea cada una tiene 5 sílabas; 2da línea tiene siete sílabas.

Here are other things to talk about and reflect on with your loved ones about the wind:
- How does the wind affect nature?
- Examples: the birds, trees, seeds, soil, etc.
- How does the wind affect people?
- Examples: teachers, police officers, nurses, truck drivers
Aquí hay otras cosas para hablar y reflexionar con sus seres queridos sobre el viento:
