Now that springtime is finally here to stay… and summer is just around the corner, everyone’s excited to get back outside and enjoy the beautiful weather! The TTF watershed is full of beautiful green spaces to explore, and each home to a unique makeup of wild plants and animals.

Created last year in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and our reduced ability to provide in-person educational community programs, this online series brings you face to face with a wide variety of living things you may have never noticed before. Just use your computer or smart device to access the tours and enjoy photos, videos, audio recordings, and interactive maps that help you learn when and where different creatures can be found, and how to identify them.
The five nature tours (all available in English and Spanish) take you on a seasonal journey through late spring, summer, and early fall, so that you can see how the plants and animals around us change over time. We hope that this series inspires you to explore these spaces and make your own discoveries!
In May: Enjoy Episode 1: Tacony Creek Park North. Late spring in Tacony Creek Park brings beautiful flowers and migratory birds! Join us for an exploration of the northern half of the park, and learn how to identify and avoid bothersome plants like poison ivy and stinging nettle.
In June: Take Episode 2 along with you: Tacony Creek Park South. Do you know which birds build mud nests under the Whitaker Ave bridge in Tacony Creek Park? Or which insects depend on the beautiful common milkweed plant? We answer these questions and more as we make our way through the southern part of the park.
July: Time to watch Episode 3: Ethel Jordan Park in Abington. If you’ve never watched a monarch butterfly emerge from its chrysalis before, this tour is for you! Ethel Jordan Park in mid-summer has a lot to offer including fireflies, salamanders, and a beautifully blooming rain garden!
August: Head to Germantown’s Vernon Park for Episode 4. Vernon Park is a community hub with something for everyone! A wide variety of towering trees here provide shade for humans and habitat for wildlife. Get to know some of these trees and wildlife including catbirds, cardinal flowers, and silk trees.
Head into fall at Abington Friends School in October for Episode 5 ! Just because fall is approaching doesn’t mean that we can’t still find wonderful wildlife in the TTF watershed! We explore the campus of Abington Friends School and enjoy mushrooms, woodpeckers, and some excellent looks at magnified macroinvertebrates!
