TTF is excited to work with PowerCorpsPHL Rangers during this Spring/Summer Ranger Academy training season. Please welcome Jaquay Scott and Kevin Nicholson, our May trainees. Learn more about Jaquay below.
My name is Jaquay Scott, I am a 25-year-old father and Native Philadelphian.
Currently, I am apprenticing/serving through Americorps by way of PowerCorpsPHL with the hope of becoming a Park Ranger in our beautiful city.
I have been fortunate enough to have many influential people and experiences in my life which led me down this career path. My mother, Aisha Futch, has been a teacher in the Philadelphia School District for the majority of my life. Having a teacher for a mother gave me an early thirst for knowledge and learning. My grandmother Diane Scott, now retired, used to be the director of the afterschool program and summer camp at Athletic Recreation Center where I also started my first job as a camp counselor for PPR.
For middle school, I attended The Philadelphia School which offered a blend of outdoor and indoor learning environments as we participated in some forest restoration around the Shelly Ridge Girl Scout Camp. It was here, that my love of nature was nurtured and strengthened.
Between these two women and school, there have been countless families served with passion, empathy, and understanding. The Earth is our mother, our provider, and our home, and the quality of the human experience is directly linked to our involvement in its maintenance.
My dream is to develop further and repair the relationships between the African American communities and nature. Together we can be the change we want to see!
